I'm telling you - after having a baby and struggling with that post-partum body image - you just can't put a price on the feeling of achievement. I owe that to the awesome trainers at Vera who look at your whole picture – not just your weight and fitness level. They're right there by your side during the sessions to make sure every single movement is done correctly for maximum effectiveness. Plus, they have the right combination of encouragement, enthusiasm and toughness to push you along – making the sessions hard and actually fun. I've gone to the big gyms before, but they never really got me hooked the way this place has, never got me amazing results like this and never left me each time with a cool feeling of empowerment. This is hands-down, the best thing I've done for myself in a long time.

- Liz D.

I've been going to Vera Fitness for about 3 months and I love it. I've lost ~3 inches off my waist and am inspired to excercise regularly outside the sessions. I've travelled a lot this summer and the trainers I've worked with showed me exercises I could do with some easily packable equipment that I've used in hotels and at home. The kinesis machines strengthen your whole body and are challenging but set to your fitness level. The targeted heart-rate approach to cardio has kept me going outside of the gym as well...I'm getting much more out of a 30-minute walk around my neighborhood than I used to! The staff are warm and encouraging, and the atmosphere is very inviting...stylishly sweaty :) And you can book appointments, track your fitness progress, and even keep a food diary that tracks calories and nutrients online. I've been to many gyms before, and can even have a free membership at the posh Pro Club through work, but will keep going to Vera.

- Lara H.

Addictive, supportive, and best of all results! I have a highly competitive, athletic background and I am totally impressed with the flexibility of the Kinesis equipment and the personal trainers. It's easy for me to push with weights, but what I love is the integration of yoga and pilates. Adding flexibility and core strengthening in each workout has brought huge results in reshaping my body. Even though the training session is about 30 minutes, I have found my core muscles truly engaged when I do my cardio afterward.

Each of the trainers brings their own background to the workout giving me a different insight into the seemingly simple moves on Kinesis. I now have better flexibility, better breath control and capacity, and better posture in addition to a stronger reshaped body.

Vera Fitness isn't just a training studio, it's a wonderful place for "me" time. With three kids 8 and under and a company to run, I often forgo things just for me. I love that when I'm at Vera, I feel pampered and strong, and therefore I'm much better prepared for dealing with work and family. I have worked out with women 10-20 years older than me as well as women 10-20 years younger with every body type imaginable. Vera is truly for everyone.

I encourage you to try Vera out and see for yourself.

- Andrea G.

Vera Wellness Series

Fall Back to Vera Fitness!

This Fall, enrich your health and knowledge with Vera's Wellness Series. Your three month subscription to a Tuesday or Saturday series includes six discussions on various topics plus tips and tools to use right now.

Register today at Vera Fitness or by calling (206) 453-4632.

Vera Wellness Series - Fall 2008
September 13 - November 25
Tuesday Series: 6:30pm-7:45pm
or
Saturday Series: 9:30am-10:45am

Date & Topic

Saturday Sept 13 / Tuesday Sept 16 Wellness 101
Tuesday Sept 30 / Saturday Oct 4 Stretch Your Way to Health
Tuesday Oct 14 / Saturday Oct 18 Strength Training for Women
Tuesday Oct 28 / Saturday Nov. 1 Cardio: Moving for Health and Fitness
Tuesday Nov 11 / Saturday Nov 15 Healthy Snacking
Saturday Nov 22 / Tuesday Nov 25 Breathe Your Way to Health

Three-month Subscription: $80 Vera Fitness Clients - Redeemable by using 2 sessions
                                        $90 General Public

Client Rewards

Client Loyalty
To honor your commitment to health, we've created the following packages and incentives:

Packages:
8 Sessions - $320 (receive 1 free session after 3 consecutive purchases)
16 Sessions - $640 (receive 1 free session with each purchase and 3 free sessions after 3 consecutive purchases)
30 Sessions - $1200 (receive 4 free sessions with each purchase)

Client Rewards
Earn a free session with a review! Write a review about Vera Fitness at Yelp.com or Citysearch.com and get 1 free session. By day three I was so low energy and cranky that I would have slapped my own mother for an apple. Not only did I not keep the weight off but my reserves were so depleted that I was a mess on my training rides; these were not the results I was looking for.

Let’s consider why high protein diets are not for everyone. First, the big weight loss you experience on these high protein diets (like Atkins and stage 1 of the South Beach Diet) is mainly water weight. This is because the increase of protein consumed causes the uric acid and urea levels in the body (toxic byproducts of protein breakdown and metabolism) to go up. Your body must flush your kidneys with water to expel the toxins. A side effect of this diuretic response is the loss of important minerals such as calcium. So not only are you shedding water rather than fat but you lose calcium, which we know is vital for bone health.

Secondly, protein is not a clean source of fuel for your body. Not only does it introduce toxic byproducts to your kidneys but it denies your brain the stuff it needs to function optimally. Simply put, it starves your brain. Glucose is the only fuel source used by brain cells and since neurons cannot store it your brain needs a steady source of glucose delivered through the blood stream, and the carbohydrates you put in your mouth.

A healthy diet includes all the macronutrients: protein, carbohydrate, and fat. When dieting remember, a calorie is a calorie. If you are consuming more calories than you use, you will not lose weight. It’s a good idea to limit or eliminate simple and processed carbs (think white bread, white sugar, white rice) as they can play with your blood sugar and leave you feeling hungry. Turn to complex carbohydrates for fuel that will leave you satisfied. Be sure to use our online nutrition tool to make sure you are getting everything you need to function optimally.

Jessica Stevens

Pick up your fresh local organic Produce at Vera Fitness

We are proud to announce that Vera Fitness is the new pick up location for Full Circle Farm!

Full Cirle Farm is a certified organic farm located in Carnation, WA. Their high quality produce is available through their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program, and found in local Farmers Markets, restaurants and grocery stores. The CSA program allows Full Circle Farm to connect those who live in urban areas to an environmentally and socially responsible source of food from a local farm.

Vera Fitness can be your local pick up location for healthy, delicious organically grown food. The flexibility of Full Circle Farm's CSA will ensure your satisfaction. Each week they provide a well balanced and unique box of produce. font-family: 'Verdana','sans-serif'">by Jessica

Myth #1: To get a flat stomach I'm going to do 100 crunches everyday

Unfortunately, when it comes to toning up and losing fat there is no such thing as spot reduction. There are 3,500 calories in 1 pound of fat. To lose fat, you need to be in a negative calorie balance. Instead of doing 100 reps of isolated movements you are better off doing cardio to create a calorie deficit for the day. You can lose fat and gain tone by adhering to a fitness regimen that includes regular cardio workouts, strength training, stretching, and a balanced diet.

When it comes to core-strength and conditioning, working out abs alone is over-rated. The ‘core’ is made up of a number of different muscles in your torso, including your abdominals. These muscles stabilize the spine, pelvis, and shoulder girdle and allow you to stand erect and move on two feet. To be effective, core workouts need to incorporate all of these muscles. A solid core gives you a great base of support, allows for more powerful movement in your extremities, distributes loads/stress effectively and protects the low back from load/stress injury.

So how is this applied at Vera? First, Kinesis. The multi-joint movements performed on kinesis recruit core muscles and target them in all three planes. Second, the trainers at Vera create a cardio plan that keeps you in an aerobic zone (aerobic= fat burning) to help you reach a calorie deficit and finally, the online nutrition tool is a great guide for making nutritious food choices. Your eating habits will make or break your fitness goals. Take a look at your account and make sure you are consuming within your caloric limits.Talk to your trainer for help in setting up your fitness plan.

May Item of the Month

Is it a jacket? Is it a sweater? No, it’s a shak! Last year a friend was casually perusing the wool clothing rack at a mountaineering store when the owner came over and said, “buy some, it will change your life, if not, return it.” That was a challenge she couldn’t refuse. The following week she was going to climb Mt Rainier so she purchased a wool base layer fully intending on returning it after the climb. You know where this is going. There she was, standing at the summit when all of a sudden she had her first epiphany of the day; “I’m the only one on this crazy expedition that has not been adding and removing layers every time we stop and start back up. When everyone else is shivering, I feel great. I’m not experiencing that normal clammy feeling I get when I wear synthetics. This stuff feels great against my skin.” When she got back to the car and striped off other layers she realized that her wool was missing something... that funky smell that synthetics get after working out in them! That’s when she had her second epiphany of the day, “Dang, that guy was right, this stuff is changing my life.”

When people take a look at the Ibex clothing we sell at Vera the first thing most of them say is: “I’ve never thought about wearing wool for working out.” Here are five reasons why we think it’s the perfect fabric for both exercise and everyday life.

1. Wool has a wider temperature comfort range than other fabrics. That’s why my friend on Rainier didn’t have to change layers all the time.

2. Wool is naturally anti microbial, that’s why it doesn’t stink after a workout like the synthetic clothes most people wear.

3. Wool keeps you warm when you get wet. It’s perfect for a mild spring day run around Greenlake when showers are in the forecast and a jacket would be too warm.

4. It wicks better than synthetics. The only way for moisture to escape through a synthetic fabric is for it to turn to vapor and squeeze through the gaps between individual fibers. Wool has this property PLUS moisture from your skin is absorbed into each fiber and evaporates on the outside of the garment. You won’t believe what a huge difference in comfort this makes.

5. I no longer enjoy going to my gym. But my joy? Well, let me tell you, I have never been much of an exercise person. (Hence the quick in and out routine). It's a chore. But not at Vera. I have a fabulous trainer who is very attentive and makes sure I'm always in the right position. There are so many things to be aware of all at once that it is really wonderful to have someone watching to make sure I don't do the exercise in the wrong way and hurt myself rather than strengthen myself. No strained muscles here. And the machines are easy to use and boy do you get a workout! My trainer Jessica varies the workout so I'm never sure exactly what area she's going to target, and she seems to have an uncanny way of finding all the muscles I haven't worked for a while. I leave feeling exhausted but happy, knowing that by the time I reach my car I will feel invigorated again and ready for the rest of my day. I highly recommend trying Vera Fitness out - as long as you don't mind being disappointed in where you're going now.

Anyone Up for The Great Urban Race???

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone would be interested in joining me at the Great Urban Race? Has anyone done this race before? If so, please share your experience with the rest of us! I have never done it, but it looks really fun, and I am planning to participate in it this year. Check it out:

http://www.greaturbanrace.com/index.html
So, if anyone is up for joining me, I would love it! Kari

Valerie Burlingame, Vera Fitness Trainer

Growing up in Colorado and attending an Outward Bound high school Valerie was influenced by nature and adventure at an early age. Later in college she studied acting at DePaul's theatre conservatory in Chicago which exposed her to rigorous physical, vocal and emotional training. While there she began an apprenticeship with the movement faculty that would later lead to a position as a professor and the founding of holistic healing center, innergy and later Deeper into Yoga. After 8 years of teaching Valerie is best known for her in-depth work with therapeutic applications of yoga ranging from chronic pain, post-op and integrative exercise to clients dealing with MS, Cancer and Autoimmune disorders. Cross Training. Strength Training. Core Training. Call it what you will, but we runners are supposed to be doing it, and I, like many of us, keep putting it off. I don't like gyms. I don't like exercising indoors. All those moves seem too pointless, require too much futzing about. I get bored because I see that list of today's exercises stretching out in front of me and I JUST DON'T WANT TO.

But I need to. And while I'm enjoying the aerobic engine base-training running has been building me, I'm starting to notice I'm getting a little less functional in non-running daily activities.

I had the opportunity to work with a personal trainer about 5 years ago, and I have to say I was probably in the best functional shape of my life. And ideally, you should be able to take what you learn from training and just apply it yourself, but the motivation and the "wonder what I'll be doing today" factor just aren't there when I direct my own gym sessions. But I'm not Oprah, I don't have the cash flow for ongoing personal training, I work in education, for cryin' in the sink!

On Friday I got a head's-up email about a new fitness center in town near Greenlake, Vera Fitness. The $40 semi-private personal training session fee interested me, the promise of a free trial session sold me. So, as usual dear readers, I risked dorkitude, signed up and am coming back to report on my experience.

First off, I love the fact that you can schedule your session online by picking from available times without having to call in. And this is how you schedule any additional sessions that you buy there. Which is cool -- my running schedule moves my x-training days around during the week, so the flexibility is appreciated.

When I showed up today, I met trainer Kari Giboney, who was very nice, very patient and encouraging, and is herself also a runner, which is excellent. She definitely knew to add some IT band stretches, glute work and hamstring curls into my routine today.

Vera Fitness' strength and core workout is built around the Technogym Kinesis system, which is a full range-of-motion pulley system. It's like a very fancy cable weight system. This video from the maker probably gives a better, if cheesier, description than I could:

[See original blog at http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/rundivarun/archives/134974.asp]

Urrrr. This ended up being quite the workout! To say I've significantly lost core strength and general non-running large muscle strength over the last year or so would be an understatement. But I battled through. Apparently he makeup of the Kinesis workout varies each session, so there's the built-in element of surprise.

One interesting complication is that up to 4 people can be in the Kinesis section at a time with the trainer rotating around between you. You can sign up with friends, or, take your chances and meet some other women (yeah, sorry guys, it's a women's fitness studio). Or, if you pick a less popular time slot, you might be alone, as I was today.

Once you are done with the core and strength work, you move over to the cardio equipment. I did the Wave machine (kind of like skating) for 10 minutes and then went another 10 on the regular elliptical, which was like being on vacation after everything else. Apparently as a regular client I'll get a "key" that I'll pick up each session which will prescribe the day's cardio workout and record what I do when I plug it into each machine.

Yeah, you read me right. They win. I'll be back. That said, at $40 a session it's a luxury item so I'll still need to find the motivation to get some strength work in under my own steam a couple times a week too. I'll keep you posted on how it all goes.

Have you tried Vera Fitness, another personal training facility, or found the secret to your own self-training? Post about it in the comments! In the meantime, see you out there.

Posted by Jennie Struijk at March 24, 2008 7:00 p.m at SeattlePI.com.

Vera Fitness in Daily Candy!

The staff at Vera Fitness is thrilled to be today's feature in DailyCandy. Transparancy - or "holier-than-thou" strategy. This is when a company strives to be exactly what they say they are, or truly transparent.
   2. Fake It - This is when a company openly pokes fun at marketing excesses and admits inauthenticity
   3. Fake-Real - Businesses are authentic when they openly acknowledge how fake they are.

Do you find it ironic that number 2 and 3 have the word "fake" in their title. Can a company achieve authenticity by merely poking fun at themselves or acknowledging that they are fake? To me this seems like a cop out and a way for any business to jump on the authenticity train while its gaining momentum.

I believe authenticity is fundamentaly about uncovering the human layers of doubt and self-conciousness in order to reveal a true person. Then to uplift that persons true self by building a community of support around them that continues to challenge and prune each others layers ultimately creating a business that blossoms.

Sound organic? Essentially it is. We try so hard to create structure, boundaries and experiences that control our actions and reponses that we end up losing touch with the most critical element uniting us all. We are all people. People run businesses and people are our customers. Let's bring it back to basics and start respecting people simply because they exist as human beings.

Vera Fitness was founded with this principle in mind, and today I was able to see it come to fruition. My wife made her first visit to Vera. She has birthed two beautiful boys in the last two years. Prior to that she was an accomplished runner, skier, and swimmer. If you are a mother you will understand.

She told me about her Vera experience tonight at dinner. She said she was immediately put at ease by the trainers and gently asked about her previous back issues. They moved into some slow stretching before moving to the Kinesis where she experienced a true interaction with the trainer when the trainer told her how beautiful and connected her body was with the earth for birthing two children and how strong and majestic she is at this place in her life where she has the freedom to shape herself in any way.

As she told me this we both felt a little teary-eyed. How great it was to have her be truly met in this space. How great for her to have all of her preconceived notions about working out with trainers squashed. How unbelievably honoring and rare to find a place of solace and rejuvination among complete strangers.

To me this was a real experience. Call it transparent. Call it "holier-than-thou." Call it whatever you want, but one thing is for certain; you can't call it fake. I am going to call it authentic and continue to let it guide my decisions and strategies as VP of Marketing.

Joel DeJong

VP Marketing, Vera Fitness

Read the time article:

http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/article/0,28804,1720049_1720050_1722070-1,00.html

Vera Fitness Grand Opening!

“I counted it up: we’ve been planning this endeavor for 18 months.” I'm sorry if this does the same for you. Vera staff was chatting about this story today and I wanted to follow up on our conversation.

Haile Gebreselassie holds the world record for the marathon yet has decided to withdraw from competing in the marathon at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games due to pollution (BBC). The pollution levels in Beijing are such that top athletes like Gebreselassie and Paula Radcliffe, both of whom suffer from asthma, must seriously reconsider their strategies as they prepare for the Summer games. However, athletes are not the only ones to suffer from the affects of pollution.

By government estimates 400,000 people die prematurely from respitory illnesses in China every year. The health care costs for premature death and disability related to air pollution is estimated up to 4% of the country's GDP (Mother Jones). Much of this has been attributed to the rapid development currently taking place in China.

China has gone to some pretty strange extremes to be good hosts for the coming games such as drastically limiting water use by farmers with mixed results (MSNBC). 33 million trees have been planted along Beijing's highways and rivers (to block dust storms) but a mountain was destroyed to provide the soil. In preparation for the games China has spent $3.6 bilion in an attempt to be green. Do you have a New Year's Resolution? Well, if you're like most Americans (88 percent in 2001 according to a GNC poll), you have at least one resolution. And, if you are like the majority of these promise-makers, your resolution is probably related to health and fitness. In 2001 (according to GNC), 55 percent promised to eat healthier, 50 percent resolved to exercise more, and 38 percent wanted to lose weight.

While resolutions are well-intentioned, unfortunately most people fail at keeping them. With all the hype surrounding these promises, it's easy to get caught up in the hype without really taking them seriously.

We live in a throw-away society and even our resolutions, I'm afraid, are not immune. However, especially for promises that include improving our health, it's in our best interest not to take them lightly.

So, what's the secret to successful resolutions? While you can't wave a magic wand and make your resolution come true, there are some easy steps to take that will make it easier to fulfill your promise to yourself.

Choose an obtainable goal. Resolving to look like a super model is not realistic for the majority of us, but promising to include daily physical activity in our lives is very possible.

Avoid choosing a resolution that you've been unsuccessful at achieving year after year. This will only set you up for failure, frustration and disappointment. If you are still tempted to make a promise that you've made before, then try altering it. For example, instead of stating that you are going to lose 30 pounds, try promising to eat healthier and increase your weekly exercise.

Create a game plan. At the beginning of January, write a comprehensive plan. All successful businesses start with a business plan that describes their mission and specifics on how they will achieve it. Write your own personal plan and you'll be more likely to succeed as well.

Break it down and make it less intimidating. Rather than one BIG end goal, dissect it into smaller pieces. Set several smaller goals to achieve throughout the year that will help you to reach the ultimate goal. Then, even if you aren't able to reach your final goal, you will have many smaller, but still significant, achievements along the way. For example, if your goal is to complete a 10K race, your smaller goals could be running a 5K in less than 30 minutes, adding upper and lower body strength training to increase your muscular endurance, and running 2 miles with a personal best completion time.

Ask friends and family members to help you so you have someone to be accountable to. Just be sure to set limits so that this doesn't backfire and become more irritating than helpful. For example, if you resolve to be more positive ask them to gently remind you when you start talking negatively.

Reward yourself with each milestone. If you've stuck with your resolution for 2 months, treat yourself to something special. But, be careful of your reward type. If you've lost 5 pounds, don't give yourself a piece of cake as an award. Instead, treat yourself to something non-food related, like a professional massage.

Don't go it alone! Get professional assistance. Everyone needs help and sometimes a friend just isn't enough. Sometimes you need the help of a trained professional. Don't feel that seeking help is a way of copping out. Especially when it comes to fitness, research studies have shown that assistance from a fitness professional greatly improves people's success rate.

Limit your number of promises. You'll spread yourself too thin trying to make multiple changes in your life. This will just lead to failure of all of the resolutions.
On average only about 20% of us keep our New Year's resolutions. Unfortunately, some of the biggest failures are found in fitness resolutions. But don't let the statistics get you down. By following the tips above you'll be better equipped to fall into the successful 20% category.

Lynn Bode is a certified personal trainer specializing in Internet-based fitness programs. If we take a close look at our December calendar, we lose anywhere between 1 to 2 weeks of physical activity. In fact, it is not unusual for some people to write off exercise for the entire month.

This should not be the case. With proper goal setting and a little time management maneuvering, there is no reason why we cannot balance the endless dinners, mad shopping sprees and frenzied holiday preparations with a regular fitness regimen. This may sound tough, but it is fashionably doable. It would not even require much effort, just commitment.

GET SMART

Staying active during the holidays requires effective goal setting. Goals must be

SMART:

Specific - Specify what you want to achieve. The more specific and detailed your goals, the more likely these can be realized. "Focusing on maintaining a good fitness level" is almost specific but still short of quantifiable.

Measurable - Utilize standard measuring devices, such as a heart rate monitor, tape measure, caliper, exercise log, etc., to determine whether you need to fine-tune your exercise program.

Action-oriented - Training for maintenance can be translated into performing minimal exercise requirements, like engaging in physical activity for 20 minutes, 3 days a week.

Realistic - The yuletide season is not the ideal time to be competitive but rather to hold on to fitness gains from previous months. If the activity turns out to be a walk in the park, it is justifiable to up the ante a tad, as long as doing so would not interfere with the rest of your day's scheduled activities.

Time-bound - Set time frames and deadlines for your fitness goals to help you stay on track. If you adhere to your schedule most of the time, then slacking off temporarily would not hurt much.

HOLIDAY FITNESS TIPS

Seek social support. Announce to family and friends that you have committed yourself to a reasonable fitness regimen for the duration of the season. You should get the support of those who truly have your best interest at heart.

Do not get overwhelmed. During the holiday rush, you will always have too many tasks and too little time to accomplish them. If you feel you're close to breaking point, stop, take a deep breath and prioritize tasks. Take things a step at a time.

Do not let a missed exercise session drive you nuts. Lapses will be inevitable during this busy month. But remember that you are only after the "minimum"; it won't take much to make up for a missed workout the following day.

Exercise early in the day. Getting it done first thing in the morning usually guarantees compliance. If you schedule physical activity last in your to-do list for the day, chances are you won't get it done. But, if mornings are impossible, then exercise when it is most convenient to do so.

Play favorites. When you feel like you have more reasons not to hit the health club or are simply bored, pick your most favorite exercise or activity and just do it.

Go shopping. Shopping involves a lot of walking, and walking is exercise. If you're a little financially challenged, go window-shopping instead

Reward yourself. You've been busting your buns to stay fit. This is the perfect time to look out for number one. Get yourself a new pair of cross-trainers or workout apparel.

Buy gifts that promote fitness. The best gifts are those that promote better health.

Do not delay signing up with a gym. Sign up with a club while you've still got the dough. Joining a health club creates the right atmosphere for the coming year's fitness resolutions.

Join club activities. Health clubs generally come up with mini-Olympics for members during this relatively slow month (for them). Such a competitive undertaking could challenge you to overcome the temptation to lay off from physical activities.

Keep your beach body in mind. When the lure of the buffet table is great, remember what your body would look like come summer time.

HAPPY, HEALTHY HOLIDAYS

A healthy lifestyle is clearly a balance between righteousness and pleasure. December is undeniably a time for loving, giving and sharing. But let us not forget our health. Remember: We can enjoy more Christmases if we stay healthy and fit.

Norman Encarnacion is an American Council on Exercise (ACE)-certified personal trainer.
