Benefits of Meditation

March 19, 2012 by Vicki Wilson

The benefits of meditation are touted everywhere for alleviating all sorts of physical ailments and helping us cope with the stress our modern go-go-go lifestyles. Why is this ancient practice so powerful? According to Psychology Today, “neuroscientists have found that meditators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex – brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. This mental shift decreases the negative effects of stress, mild depression and anxiety. There is also less activity in the amygdala, where the brain processes fear.” In other words, meditation allows us to learn how to process information in a way that keeps us calm and content, in turn making uncomfortable or unhappy situations more manageable. However, the benefits of meditation are not limited to psychology alone. To name just a few, “studies have shown that, among other benefits, meditation can help reverse heart disease, the number-one killer in the U.S. It can reduce pain and enhance the body’s immune system, enabling it to better fight disease.”

Meditation looks different to everyone. We don’t need to spent three hours sitting silently, but rather each of us can find a practice that works for us. For example, I find that anytime I need to decompress, if I take a walk by a natural body of water and just sit, I feel rejuvenated. For me, this is meditation. Others get more out of being guided by an instructor or attending a yoga class. What’s most important is that it works for you and feels genuine.

If you are interested in learning more about meditation, join our client, Amy Haugerud, for a series on self-exploration and healing.  If any of you have ever joined Amy in one of our Kinesis sessions, you know how bright and inviting her personality is. This training is not affiliated with Vera Whole Health; however, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share this amazing gift Amy is sharing with her community. See below for more information:
